Lorry drivers wages surge to seven times the UK average

Our recent blog HGV driver shortage – don’t compromise on safety highlighted the impact the shortage of lorry drivers is having on UK supply chains. As a result of these warnings, it is not surprising that the scramble to find new recruits has resulted in wages for HGV drivers surging to more than seven times the UK average.

Research by the job site, Indeed, shows that salaries for driving jobs are growing faster than any average wage growth recorded for all jobs in the UK. By comparison, lorry drivers’ wages have risen by 5.7% between February and July of this year, while wages for all other industries have climbed by only 0.8% in the same period. Clearly, the demand for qualified drivers is reaching a critical point for the logistics sector.

The knock-on effect of this is that large companies are being impacted by supply shortages. Companies which have been affected include McDonald’s, which had to stop serving milkshakes in its UK stores, and Greggs announcing that stocks of its chicken bites were running extremely low.

Meanwhile, drivers already in employment are seeing their wages increase overnight. However, despite the surge in wages, it has not guaranteed that recruits will stay. Many companies are now experiencing the challenge of losing highly skilled drivers more rapidly than they can secure replacements.
