Municipality of Leiden

Discover how the Brigade Backeye®360 AI System eliminates truck blind spots with four HD cameras and AI-powered Human Form Recognition. Trusted by the Municipality of Leiden, it enhances driver visibility, detects vulnerable road users, and improves urban fleet safety.

The Municipality of Leiden has partnered with Brigade Electronics to take a proactive step in protecting vulnerable road users by equipping its fleet with the HFR HD Backeye®360 AI System. This collaboration brings advanced AI-powered blind spot detection and 360-degree visibility to the city’s waste collection vehicles, ensuring safer operations in busy urban environments.

360-degree camera system with AI

4 HD cameras, 1 monitor, no blind spots

Many vulnerable road users are unaware of the blind spots of a truck, which can lead to serious incidents because they simply cannot be seen by the driver. HFR HD Backeye®360 AI System from Brigade, blind spots are a thing of the past and the driver has a 360-degree view around the vehicle. This was an important factor in the decision by the Municipality of Leiden to equip its vehicle fleet with this system.
Safety is a top priority for the municipality of Leiden, and that includes vehicle safety.

To provide maximum protection for vulnerable road users, all vehicles involved in household waste collection are equipped with our Backeye®360 AI system for active blind spot detection. The system was first tested in a pilot on one vehicle. The responses were so positive that we have now equipped fifteen vehicles with active blind spot detection, ranging from side loaders to rear loaders. These vehicles are all used in busy city traffic where danger is always a possibility. In addition to 360-degree visibility, the driver receives a tonal alarm if a vulnerable road user is too close to the vehicle.

AI-Powered Human Form Recognition for Smarter Blind Spot Detection

The new generation of active blind spot detection from Brigade Electronics recognises people using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. We also refer to this as Human Form Recognition (HFR).
‘The system comprises a total of four cameras, one on each side of the vehicle, and one monitor,’ explains Levert. “When a person is detected, this is not only displayed on the screen, but a warning signal also sounds. After all, the driver does not always have their eyes fixed on the monitor. The image on the monitor is split in two: a total overview of the four cameras is always shown in a top-down view and, depending on the default setting, an image of the rear or any other side. When the indicator is switched on, the camera on that side is automatically activated. This gives the driver maximum visibility during every manoeuvre and provides an additional warning if someone is in the blind spot”

The Brigade system has been well received by drivers working for the Municipality of Leiden. It works very intuitively and gives the driver a pair of extra eyes, which is certainly useful in a busy city centre like Leiden. Every new vehicle will therefore be equipped with this system.
