Understanding N2, N3, M2, and M3 Vehicle Classifications

The challenges facing bus and coach drivers and how vehicle safety solutions can help – Brigade France discusses

Classifying vehicle categories like N2, N3, M2, and M3 are crucial to differentiate diverse types of vehicles based on their intended purpose, size and weight.

These classifications appear in vehicle safety initiatives, such as the Milan Blind Spot Resolution and Europe’s General Safety Regulation (GSR), which requires safety equipment to be installed on vehicles classified into these categories.

What Do “N” and “M” Categories Represent?

The classifications “N” and “M” are part of the EU’s vehicle categorisation system.

The key distinction between these categories is their primary purpose.

N Category

Vehicles designed and constructed for the transport of goods.

M Category

Vehicles designed and constructed for the transport of passengers.

Each category is further divided based on weight and passenger capacity.

M2 - Passenger Transport

  • With more than 8 seats in addition to the driver’s seat
  • Vehicle of less than 5 tonnes

M3 - Passenger Transport

  • With more than 8 seats in addition to the driver’s seat
  • Vehicle of more than 5 tonnes

N2 - Goods Transport

  • Weight between 3.5t and 12t

N3 - Goods Transport

  • Weight superior than 12t

These distinctions are vital for a range of applications, including:

  • Safety Regulations: Initiatives like the Milan Blind Spot Resolution and GSR impose different requirements based on the vehicle category, ensuring that safety measures are tailored to the vehicle’s size, weight and purpose.
  • Roadworthiness Testing: N2/N3 and M2/M3 vehicles may have different inspection standards due to their weight, size and operating environments.
  • Environmental Standards: Larger vehicles (N3 and M3) often face stricter emissions standards due to their higher fuel consumption and environmental impact.

Whether transporting goods or passengers, these classifications help ensure vehicles are equipped with the appropriate vehicle safety technology and environmental measures, enhancing road safety for everyone.
