Europipeline Equipment Enhances Pipe-Laying Safety with Brigade Vehicle Safety Technologies

Europipeline Equipment partnered with Brigade to improve pipe-laying safety on major pipeline construction projects. By integrating AI cameras, radar and 360° visibility systems, operators gained greater awareness around large machines, helping to protect workers and support safer operations in complex environments.

The partnership between Europipeline Equipment and Brigade Electronics continues to evolve, driven by innovation and the safety of personnel on national and international pipeline construction sites.

The Italian company, Europipeline Equipment, which specialises in the design, construction and maintenance of machinery for the Oil & Gas sector, has supplied three pipe-laying machines equipped with Brigade smart camera systems to SALP, Società Appalto Lavori Pubblici S.p.A., whilst a further ten machines are already under construction for the German client PPS, Pipeline Systems GmbH, with the first deliveries having commenced at the start of the year.

The machines in question are pipe-laying machines used in the construction of gas and oil pipelines; these are large-scale machines that frequently operate in complex environments characterized by limited visibility.
In response to these operating conditions, Europipeline Equipment has adopted Brigade AI cameras, used specifically to detect the presence of people in the machine’s manoeuvring area.

“On machinery of this size, visibility is limited, especially when a person is just a few metres in front of or behind the machine. To prevent accidents on site, the client chose to install a smart camera system capable of alerting the operator when a person is in the danger zone.”

The system comprises two Brigade AI cameras, one at the front and one at the rear, which can be configured via a PC to precisely define the detection zones. This is a crucial feature on pipeline construction sites, where machines often operate at close quarters, sometimes as little as one metre or one and a half metres apart. The cameras detect and recognise human forms within the predefined detection area and reliably signal their presence, alerting the driver visually and audibly before a potential collision occurs.

“The requirement was not simply to detect an obstacle in general, but to distinguish the presence of a person. During pipeline laying, vehicles operate very close to one another: a traditional ‘system would have generated constant false alarms. Brigade’s smart cameras, on the other hand, enable precise detection of a person, avoiding unnecessary alerts.”

The collaboration between the two companies has been ongoing for several years now. Europipeline Equipment has been using Brigade systems since 2017, initially with Backsense® radars installed on its vehicles for obstacle detection and subsequently with advanced vision systems such as the Backeye®360 360 Camera System.

The heavy-duty Backsense® radar proximity sensor systems are designed to detect objects in blind spots, significantly reducing incidents. They detect both stationary and moving objects, providing the driver with visual and audible alerts in the cab, alerting the operator whose attention cannot be focused on all danger zones. Meanwhile, the Backeye®360 system is an advanced four-camera solution designed to eliminate these blind spots and facilitate low-speed manoeuvres. By providing a real-time panoramic view, the system allows the driver to see the entire perimeter of the vehicle directly on the monitor, improving safety and increasing the efficiency of operations.

Over the years, Brigade has established itself as a reliable partner for the specific needs of the pipeline sector, thanks in part to its ability to support clients operating in international contexts.

“We do a great deal of work abroad, particularly in the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.”

Having a global partner like Brigade, with a presence and support network in various countries, is a significant added value.

The possibility of further integrating safety systems represents a strategic development for the future. Brigade’s cameras can, in fact, be connected directly to machine systems to enable, if necessary, the automatic shutdown of the vehicle if people are present in the danger zone.

“The aim is to increasingly reduce the margin for human error. This is why the level of satisfaction with these solutions is very high.”

The collaboration between Europipeline Equipment and Brigade thus confirms how technological innovation applied to safety can become a central element in major national and international infrastructure projects, helping to protect operators and vehicles even in the most complex working environments.
