Veritas Kentsel Ortamlarda Atık Toplama Araçlarının Güvenliğini Artırıyor

Veritas, kentsel ortamlarda güvenliği artırmak ve savunmasız yol kullanıcılarını korumak için atık toplama araçlarına yapay zeka güvenlik sistemleri ve kamera çözümleri kurdu.

The multiutility company Veritas has improved their waste collection vehicle safety in urban environments by equipping Brigade AI safety systems and camera solutions. The project aims to improve safety for drivers, crew members and vulnerable road users.

Veritas delivers water, waste and energy services across 44 municipalities in the Metropolitan City of Venice and seven in the province of Treviso. To reduce risk during waste collection, the company has begun installing Brigade advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) across a large part of its fleet operating in Chioggia.

The Challenge

Waste collection vehicles regularly operate in busy urban areas where visibility is limited.

Chioggia presents additional challenges. Narrow streets, complex road layouts and large numbers of tourists throughout the year increase the risk of incidents involving pedestrians and cyclists.

To manage these risks, Veritas reviewed its operating model and began looking for technology that could support drivers during manoeuvres and low-speed operations.

“The morphology of the area and particularly heavy traffic, especially in summer, led us to rethink our operational models and equip ourselves with tools capable of supporting drivers even in the most stressful situations.”

– Alessio Spunton, Head of Environmental Services, Vehicle Workshop, Transfer Station and Recycling Centres, Veritas

After evaluating several options and completing months of testing, Veritas selected Brigade safety systems to improve driver awareness and reduce blind spot risk.

Collisions between commercial vehicles and vulnerable road users remain a major safety concern. Many pedestrians and cyclists are unaware of the large blind spots around heavy vehicles. Without additional safety technology, drivers may not see them.

Brigade systems combine direct vision, camera monitoring and active detection technology to reduce this risk and support safer manoeuvring.

AI Detection Technology

AI safety cameras represent a new generation of blind spot detection. Using artificial intelligence, the cameras recognise the human form (HFR – Human Form Recognition) within a defined detection area and warn the driver visually and audibly when a potential collision risk is identified.

Technologies Installed

Veritas operates a large and varied waste collection fleet. Brigade systems were selected based on the operational requirements of each vehicle type.

Side-loading compactors

Three-axle vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 26 tonnes have been fitted with Backeye®360 AI.

This system uses four cameras to create a 360° view around the vehicle while AI identifies pedestrians in real time. Drivers receive audible and visual alerts when a person enters the detection zone.

The system is particularly useful during loading operations and when vehicles enter or leave recycling areas.

Rear-loading compactors

Two and three-axle vehicles used with rear loading platforms have been equipped with two Brigade AI cameras (VBV-2230-AI) with 180° coverage.

The cameras support safe manoeuvring and help operators monitor the rear working area. They also comply with UNECE R158 GSR regulations.

Compactors and mini-compactors

Smaller vehicles used for micro-collection operations, with a gross vehicle weight of 6.5–7.5 tonnes, have been fitted with side “eye-ball” cameras (VBV-3100C) and 180° AI cameras combined with ultrasonic side sensors.
The sensors detect nearby people or obstacles and warn the driver during manoeuvres.

Utility vehicles in pedestrian areas

Vehicles used in high-footfall areas for street cleaning and waste collection have been equipped with AHD cameras (VBV-7100C) and detection sensors to improve monitoring around the vehicle.

Transfer station machinery

Veritas also equipped loaders and shovels operating at the transfer station with Brigade AI systems to reduce the risk of collisions in areas where operators and heavy machinery work in close proximity.

Driver Feedback

The project focuses on preventative safety, protecting both vulnerable road users and vehicle operators.
Driver feedback has been positive, with operators reporting increased confidence during manoeuvres in tight or busy areas.

“One of the strengths of Brigade systems is their ability to provide clear alerts without becoming intrusive,” …
“If a system is too intrusive, operators may ignore it. These devices only alert drivers when a person enters a genuine risk zone.”

– Marco Trevisan, Sales Manager for North-East Italy Brigade Electronics

Brigade also provides ongoing support for configuration, maintenance and post-installation service to ensure the systems continue to operate effectively.

Potential Expansion

Following the success of the project in Chioggia, Veritas is considering extending the technology to other municipalities it serves, particularly along the Venetian coastline where traffic density and tourist activity create similar operational risks.
