Why blind spots are the biggest safety hazard in the construction industry and in agriculture
Commercial vehicles have huge blind spots. Simply checking four mirrors takes several seconds. In that time, a vehicle travelling at just 5 km/h can cover up to 10 metres. That is enough to completely fail to see a pedestrian or cyclist.
The consequences are real: personal injury, operational downtime, liability risks and irreversible damage to reputation.
Conventional camera systems only show the driver a static image. The assessment of danger remains entirely with the human driver. Under time pressure and when highly focused on the traffic, this is a situation that regularly does not add up.
Even experienced drivers are affected by this. According to a study by the German Road Safety Council, around 30% of serious lorry accidents occur whilst turning or manoeuvring. Routine does not protect against blind spots.
This is how the people detection systems in accordance with GS-BAU-71 solve the blind spot problem
On construction sites, the safety of workers and vehicles is the top priority. However, heavy construction machinery and on- and off-road construction vehicles pose a real danger.
