Drivers of commercial vehicles are responsible not only for their own safety while working but also that of other road users; driver safety cameras can play a major part in keeping them focused. We investigate how these cameras contribute to overall road safety.

Commercial vehicle drivers carry significant responsibility, safeguarding their own well-being and that of other road users. Driver distraction cameras are increasingly playing a pivotal role in maintaining driver focus. Brigade explores how these cameras contribute significantly to overall road safety across Europe.

Every day, thousands of commercial vehicles traverse Europe’s motorways, rural roads, urban centres, construction sites, ports, and quarries, supporting economies and communities. Responsible drivers understand they control powerful vehicles that can significantly impact road safety, particularly in busy environments with pedestrians, cyclists, and workers nearby. Despite their professionalism, any driver can occasionally become distracted.

According to ‘Driver Attitudes to Vehicle Safety and Technology,’ a recent report by global NGO Together for Safer Roads (TSR), most commercial fleet drivers cover over 40,000 kilometres annually, increasing their exposure to potential collisions. Worryingly, fatalities involving commercial vehicles are rising, with significant increases recorded across several European countries. Data reveals that driver distraction remains a leading cause of preventable collisions in commercial fleets, with studies attributing 41% of heavy goods vehicle incidents to driver errors. Alarmingly, driver reactions are up to 57% slower when distracted by mobile phones and infotainment systems.

Promoting vehicle safety with Driver Safety Cameras

Thankfully, advanced safety technologies are emerging to support fleet managers and drivers, notably driver distraction cameras. These devices are designed to reduce incidents caused by inattentiveness or fatigue, with the recent integration of artificial intelligence significantly enhancing their effectiveness.

Sensors strategically positioned within vehicle cabins monitor drivers’ facial expressions, eye movements, and head positioning, detecting signs of distraction such as mobile phone use, lack of seatbelt usage, smoking, yawning, or unusual posture. AI algorithms instantly analyse these signals, providing audible alerts directly to drivers, enabling immediate corrective action. Additionally, erratic driving behaviour, such as unexpected lane drifting, can trigger alerts to both the driver and fleet manager.

Built-in AI analyses these signals and provides audible alerts to the driver. Erratic steering and unusual vehicle positioning can also trigger an alarm, and there is the option of alerting the fleet manager too.

Initially, the introduction of driver distraction cameras sparked debate across Europe regarding driver privacy versus safety benefits. Continuous monitoring of drivers’ faces and cabin environments understandably raised concerns about personal privacy. However, attitudes are rapidly evolving as drivers and fleet managers recognise the substantial safety advantages offered by these technologies.

At Brigade, we acknowledge and address these valid concerns, emphasising the significant benefits of driver distraction cameras. Our new AI Driver Safety Camera is an integral part of our safety product range, explicitly designed to support drivers, enhance safety, and foster safer driving habits across European fleets. Immediate feedback from these systems enables drivers to address risky behaviours proactively.

Results from a survey in the TSR report indicated that when drivers are exposed to the feedback given from the cameras, it positively influences their attitude to risk:

  • 53.6% of respondents report they are more careful when driving
  • 52.6% of respondents feel they are now a safer driver
  • 26% of respondents have avoided a crash due to an in-cab alert
  • 20.6% were exonerated in a crash caused by someone else

Importantly, driver distraction cameras are not only a tool for identifying areas of improvement but also provide evidence supporting driver diligence and professionalism. Quality drivers benefit from clear recognition, with footage also serving as a valuable training resource, boosting overall fleet safety and efficiency. Furthermore, insurers are more inclined to offer favourable premiums to fleets utilising these technologies, recognising reduced risk and protection against fraudulent claims.

When implementing driver distraction cameras, it is essential that fleet managers clearly communicate their purpose, handle drivers’ concerns respectfully, and ensure transparency throughout the process. With thoughtful management, these systems contribute to a positive work culture where everyone’s safety remains paramount—a mission Brigade has proudly advanced since 1976.
