What is Radar Predict?

Radar Predict is an advanced blind spot detection system designed to support safer HGV operation in busy urban environments. It focuses on protecting cyclists and vulnerable road users by helping drivers respond earlier and with greater confidence.

Using AI-powered radar technology, the system analyses the speed and direction of both the vehicle and nearby road users. It distinguishes between moving and static objects, so drivers are only alerted when there is a genuine risk – reducing unnecessary warnings and helping maintain focus.

Built for semi vehicles, Radar Predict includes trailer recognition to maintain accurate detection when turning. Clear visual and audible alerts guide the driver to take timely action, supporting safer manoeuvres and improved awareness on the nearside of the vehicle.

R151 Compliance

The detection area is 40m forward and 40m rear of the sensor. As required by R151, the area in which warnings are given to the driver are split in to 3 zones, each measured from the vehicle front bumper (0m).

The software is set to comply with R151 when the sensors are installed in the position specified in the installation manual, i.e -2.35m to -4.35m (as per blue arrow).

  • Zone 1: 2m ~ -7m (9m long)
  • Zone 2: -7m ~ -30m (23m long)
  • Zone 3: 2m ~ 7m (7m long)

Zones 1, 2 & 3 are the detection zones where the audible alerts are given to the driver as required by R151.

If the radar sensor is mounted inside the *good position* (blue arrow), each zones are defined as following:

How the Blind Spot Detection System Works

The Radar Predict blind spot detection system is fitted to the nearside of the vehicle, providing continuous coverage along the side of the truck and trailer.

When a cyclist or pedestrian enters the detection zone, the system issues a progressive warning:

  • Level 1 Warning: This activates when the steering wheel angle is under 30 degrees, and a cyclist or pedestrian enters the warning zone. In this instance, a section of orange warning LEDs illuminates.
  • Level 2 Warning: When the vehicle turns left with a steering wheel angle exceeding 30 degrees, and a collision with a cyclist or pedestrian is anticipated within a specific timeframe, Radar Predict triggers a Level 2 warning. Orange warning LEDs begin to flash in this situation.
  • Level 3 Warning: If the vehicle turns left, the steering wheel angle surpasses 30 degrees, and a collision becomes imminent, Radar Predict initiates a Level 3 warning. This includes flashing orange warning LEDs and an audible alert. The corresponding section of orange warning light LEDs assists the driver in identifying the cyclist’s position.

This staged approach helps drivers understand the level of risk and respond appropriately.
