ArcelorMittal

See how ArcelorMittal enhanced operator visibility with Brigade’s Backeye®360 AI. Combining a real-time 360° bird’s-eye view with intelligent human form recognition, the system helps operators manoeuvre with greater awareness and confidence.
Steel production environments present significant challenges for vehicle operators, with large machinery, restricted visibility and people working in close proximity. For ArcelorMittal, improving visibility around its vehicles was an important step towards reducing potential risks and supporting safer operations. By introducing Brigade’s Backeye®360 AI system, operators benefit from a complete view around their vehicles, supported by intelligent human detection technology that helps identify potential hazards.

Improving Safety in Demanding Industrial Environments

Brigade’s Backeye®360 AI is giving crane operators at ArcelorMittal greater visibility and confidence when manoeuvring around a busy industrial environment.

ArcelorMittal is one of the world’s leading steel and mining companies and the largest steel producer in Europe. Its Belgian operation employs more than 5,000 people across sites in Ghent, Geel, Genk and Liège, shipping around five million tonnes of steel each year.

Operating large machinery within this type of complex industrial environment requires operators to have a clear understanding of what is happening around their vehicle. For ArcelorMittal crane operator Jonathan Keukelier, upgrading from a conventional rear-view camera to Brigade’s intelligent 360° camera system has made a significant difference.

A complete view around the vehicle

Previously, Jonathan’s vehicle was equipped with a rear-view camera, limiting visibility to the area directly behind it.
Backeye®360 AI uses four cameras positioned around the vehicle to create a seamless, real-time 360° bird’s-eye view. This gives Jonathan a much clearer picture when manoeuvring between objects around the plant. “In our old vehicle, we only had a rear-view camera. Now we have a 360 bird’s-eye view and that is a huge improvement.”
For Jonathan, the benefit is particularly valuable when working in confined areas. “We have to manoeuvre around the plant quite a lot between various objects, and this gives us a clear view of, OK, do we have enough space or not? Does someone need to come guide us or not?”

Visibility combined with intelligent detection

Backeye®360 AI does more than give the operator a wider view. Artificial intelligence enables the system to recognize human forms and distinguish them from poles and other objects around the vehicle.
Configured detection zones provide an additional layer of awareness. When a person enters a designated zone, the operator receives an alert in the cab.

“Backeye 360 AI doesn’t just see; it also interprets. Powered by artificial intelligence, the camera can autonomously recognize human forms and distinguish them from poles and objects.”

Dirk Van Schuylenbergh – Business Development Manager Belgium at Brigade Electronics (EU) BV

By bringing the camera views together into a single 360° image and adding intelligent person detection, the system helps operators understand not only what surrounds their vehicle, but where their attention is needed.

Greater confidence from the cab

For Jonathan, the difference is clear. “It’s a fantastic system. Visibility has improved tremendously.”
The combination of all-round visibility and intelligent alerts gives operators more information when making everyday manoeuvring decisions, supporting greater confidence from the cab.
For ArcelorMittal, Backeye®360 AI demonstrates how intelligent vehicle technology can support operators working in complex industrial environments, providing the visibility and information they need to manoeuvre with greater awareness and confidence.
