Incident Prevention in the Agriculture Industry

Every year, there are more than 700 incidents involving agricultural vehicles in Germany. To combat this problem, the DLG (German Agricultural Society), with the support of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, is committed to reducing accidents in the German agricultural sector.

Accident prevention centres on the monitoring of cross traffic, which requires an insight into the blind spots at the front of large vehicles. Many blind spots occur due to the enormous distance between the driver and the front of the vehicle or due to the numerous attachments fitted. Leaving a blind junction with such a large vehicle is incredibly dangerous and the cause of many accidents. Due to the implements obstructing the view on both sides, the driver has to drive 3.5 metres into the road before he can see other vehicles.

Nationwide regulation

Following an intensive research phase, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure has stipulated in the published guidelines that vehicles must be equipped with camera monitor systems if an attachment is used. A camera system is also mandatory if the distance from the centre of the steering wheel to the front of the vehicle is 3.5 metres or more. This regulation was introduced because most accidents are caused by drivers not being able to see the front of their vehicle when manoeuvring, using a front attachment or leaving a blind junction.

For motor vehicles with front-mounted implements and self-propelled machines

A technical aid is required when carrying a front-mounted implement or when exceeding a dimension of 3.5 metres from the centre of the steering wheel to the front edge of the implement or the front end of the vehicle due to the design of the vehicle.

Which industries are affected?

Agriculture

In agriculture, combine harvesters are a good example of vehicles that must comply with the new cross-traffic regulations. Combine harvesters are often fitted with large cutter bars, which create extensive blind spots and blind the driver to what is happening in the vehicle’s path.

The length of the front end of tractors can also cause problems, even if no attachments are fitted to the vehicle. Large tractors have to enter the road to leave blind junctions before other vehicles can be recognised. In many cases, the tractor must also use the oncoming lane to turn, which is particularly dangerous without traffic control.

Municipal vehicles/ winter service

Road sweepers travel at low speed and often pass vulnerable road users. These road users have little protection and can be exposed to road sweeper brushes and moving debris, particularly when the road sweeper is operating close to footpaths. The use of cross-traffic approved camera systems ensures that the front of the vehicle is visible and the movement of the brushes can be monitored by the driver. Any person or object in the vicinity of the moving brushes can then be avoided and collisions prevented.

Forestry

Many vehicles used in forestry have several attachments that assist the driver in processing trees and shrubs. These attachments can be extremely dangerous to other road users and ground workers if not used with care. Many of these attachments extend the vehicle and create a blind spot around the front of the vehicle. A rope skidder is a good example of a vehicle that uses multiple attachments in a logging operation to pull felled trees out of a forest. Rope skidders typically operate in difficult terrain, which also reduces visibility at the front of a vehicle.
